Unix executables

	I was surprised, when I went back to some old files (about the turn  
of the century and before) that the icons in the folders had changed  
to black rectangles with "exec" in the upper left corner. The data  
beneath indicated that this was a Unix executable file. I never saw  
this before and hence the surprise. On trying to open the file I was  
presented with a screen full of gibberish.
	Can I recover these files?
