Last comment, I promise:

I do think Robert has a strong point, but I think the following is  
the point FOR GEF.

gef, I think, is asking whether the work he has spent LEARNING how to  
abstract data using the relational model is going to be wasted in  
Panorama, or whether that abstraction is still valid.

All I can say is that when I structure Panorama data management  
systems, the first thing I do is abstract the data using the  
relational model. I then bend that model to fit Panorama's strengths,  
and avoid its weaknesses. There is going to be a curve as you learn  
what Panoramas strengths and weakness are. However, even after I  
myself have learned those strengths and weaknesses:

The first thing I do when writing a new database management system in  
Panorama is abstract the data using the relational model.
