Cross Reference errors with 'Missing Equals sign (=)'

I found another database that gave an error like  "file not found-  
xrfile". Somehow I had procedures in the equation field of the design  
sheet while spreadsheet style formulas was selected??? When I changed  
to procedure style formulas it cross referenced without the error.
