Apple dropped all support for AppleTalk a while ago (10.3? 10.4?). So
Apple Events work over IP, just like all other network traffic. The port
is 3031, so make sure your firewall is not blocking it and that your
tunnel is handling traffic on that port.

Bonjour has always been an IP protocol. It does require multicast, which
is not supported on really ancient routers (I think we've had either 1
or 2 customers so far that had to purchase a new router). It should work
on a VPN, I would think.
