relational problem

I have a list of customers and a list of purchases.  I know how to  
call up the name and address in a form if the name and name in a new  
purchase matches the name in the customer list.  Is there a way to  
trigger a new entry in the customer list if there is no match to the  
lookup of the name.  Is there an example or a page in the docs that  
might point me in the right direction?
