I sent this announcement to the old QNA server last night, but I'm
sending it again because many subscribers may not have seen it yet
because they subscribe to the digest or because they automatically route
QNA messages to a folder they don't look at every day. If you've already
seen this announcement please forgive the interruption.

In a short while I'll be turning off the LetterRip QNA list server
software we've been using for close to a decade. But don't panic, the
QNA list isn't going anywhere. In fact it is going to be better than
ever. Instead of being on a separate machine, it will now be hosted
using on the same Leopard OS X Server computer that is hosting the
provue.com web site. We'll be using the Mailman mailing list software
that is included with OS X Server.
For ProVUE the big win in this move is that we will be able to
consolidate two servers and two static IP addresses into one. (The
LetterRip software won't run on the same machine as a normal e-mail
server, so we had to keep a separate machine going just for the e-mail
list.) But there are a number of other advantages as well. The mailman
software is much more configurable, and it has a web interface that
allows you to easily manage your own subscription. For example you can
easily switch from regular to digest mode (two different flavors of
digest mode, in fact), temporarily suspend delivery if you go on
vacation, change your e-mail address, etc. The first e-mail you get from
the new server will contain instructions and your password that will
allow you to manage your qna subscription.
Probably the biggest plus is that the new software keeps an archive of
messages on the list. Unfortunately the archive is not searchable, but
we have plans to rectify that, as well as to make available the past few
years of QNA list activity.
There will be some minor adjustements you'll need to make. Instead of
sending posts to
qna at lists.provue.com
once the new list starts you'll send them to
qna at provue.com
(Please don't send any posts to this address until you recieve the
welcome e-mail from the new server.)
If you filter incoming qna messages into a folder (highly recommended)
you'll need to change your filter to look for messages to
qna at provue.com.
We're going to transfer all of the e-mail addresses from the old server
to the new one, so everyone should be automatically subscribed. However,
if you are currently subscribed to the digest version of the list this
will not be transferred, you'll have to manually switch to the digest
version. There will be instructions for doing that in the welcome e-mail
you will be receiving from the new server.
Looking forward to seeing all of you on the new server!
