Bart and Jim, thanks. I was afraid that the UNIX route was what I was 
heading for.


Jim, I have no idea what ports are involved, but I do know that the 
credit card processor, in this case PayPal, uses a link that I 
provide to notify me of completed transactions.  Via their "Postback" 
process, I send the cgiParameters back to them as a verification that 
it reached my server and they consider the transaction final.

As you know, on the Enterprise side, the server waits for a response 
which loads to a variable - from what port I can't say - but it does 
come back formatted as a full link.

If the PayPal server is slow to respond, by the time it does, my 
server has gone on to other things and the response is recorded as an 
error due to variables that have changed in the interim. The result 
is that my customer never gets the expected results of their purchase 
since my server hasn't recorded it.
