posturl - Can the delay be omitted?

When processing credit card payments, I send info to the credit card
processor about the payment. At some point the processor sends back
the approval and requires a postback from my server to complete the
transaction.
When the approval comes in, I use posturl to repeat the transaction
back to them, then they send a final confirmation. Sometimes their
server may take many seconds or even a minute to respond the
postback. My server sits and waits for a while, then times out if
there's been any delay.
I dislike having the server stalled and waiting at all, but if it
has timed out, when the response does come, it's recorded as an error
and the transaction remains incomplete.
Is there any way to do something like posturl, but without any
waiting at all? I could simply have my server treat the response as
a new hit and deal with it.
