The only cases where you could not use them this 
way would be if there were curly braces in the 
text you wanted to quote, or if it were a formula 
in an auto wrap text object, which would require 
curly braces surrounding the formula as a whole. 
Customarily, most people use ordinary "quotes" 
unless there is some specific reason not to, but 
there is no reason you can't use any of the 
alternative ways of quoting text in ordinary 
cases where they aren't particularly needed.
