Comparing Dates

This should be simple, but it isn't. I want to edit a text field  
based on whether today() is before or after a certain date. the formula:

?(today()²4/17/08,"Early Registration","Late Registration")

It returns a "Fixed Point Overflow".

In the handbook examples I looked at, I didn't see any particular  
formatting for the date, beyond what I have. Am I missing something.
